MAX/MSP/JITTER

As a passionate audio designer, Jiahui has also been working extensively with Max/MSP/Jitter, delving into the realm of interactive audiovisual experiences. She is eager to explore new possibilities that merge sound and visuals, experimenting with generative art, real-time audio processing, and dynamic interaction. By pushing the boundaries of her creativity, she aims to craft immersive, multisensory experiences that challenge conventional perceptions of music, sound design, and digital art.

"Bach is my favorite composer because his music has a beautiful mix of logic and emotion, with melodies that weave together in a rich and intricate way. To explore his music in a new way, I am experimenting with Max/MSP to create visuals that show how his compositions move and change over time. This lets me see the flow and energy of his music in a more interactive way. By turning sound into visuals, I hope to better understand Bach’s work and find new ways to experience classical music."

"I often use 'random' objects in composition to introduce unpredictability, contrasting with the conscious design of every note. This piece begins with a written melody before transitioning into three layered loops: one randomly selects chord tones for 16th notes, another builds chords with random intervals in an 8th-note rhythm, and the third, a synthesizer arpeggiator, follows a fixed triadic pattern.

For audio-visual interaction, note values trigger color changes in a video by adjusting RGB values. The first loop, generating the fastest notes, controls the primary color shifts in real time. A blue toggle starts/stops the piece, while three sliders allow manual color adjustments."

"This project is inspired by the art work 'Sphere Packing: Bach,2018' from Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. Instead of creating the clashing sounds of Bach’s music, I decided to use short recordings of different languages, and let them clash and dance with background music I wrote. I reached out to several people and let them record “the best and the most important human qualities” in their perspective. It is very lucky for me to collect 57 files with 8 different languages. I use jitter to create the visual interaction with recordings, and design the pace of playing recordings carefully to build the climax and cadence of the background music. Users can apply WASD keys to change the position and direction of words flying on the screen. The background music, originally composed,  is a metaphor of eternal time and space, and loops of the recordings show that no matter how the history passes by, the best human qualities will never be changed."
